I have not been a big fan of martial arts until I watched the 2010 released ‘The Karate Kid’. I instantly got connected to it. The movie is recommended to all. Seeing this version I downloaded the 1984 version on similar storyline. There were many dialogues and scenes I couldn’t wash of my memory. Infact I realised that I learn’t few life lessons.
1. Getting adapted to new environment
Dre was new to China. He instantly made friends. Trying to learn the culture. In India, we travel across different states. We come across new language, different communities, food and ofcourse different types of people who behave differently. It is we who have to adapt to the environment and respect the new culture.
When Dre asks his mother “I want to go home”.
His mother replys – ” This is home”
2. Fight for your respect, the fighting spirit is needed.
Dre was a newbie, unfortunately he came across those bullies, which led him frustrated and unhappy. Dre was instantly seen with fighting spirit. He had to anyways defend them. He was skilled enough to attack. He started practicing karate at home watching TV.
Its like if you want something you think of it and you get it. Similarly, his determination of fighting against those bullies led him to the master of Kung fu.
3. Find a true and good teacher
Any individual needs a guru or teacher in early life in order to succeed in life. They may be parents, teachers, friends, any mentors in office. One day we all will find at least once teacher/mentor, who we follow and become the one we want to become. Later on we pass this to our future generation.
The point highlighted in the movie is Good teacher and Bad teacher. If a teacher is bad, the person can mess with any individuals’ life like anything. This made Dre’s entry in the movie, who desperately needed a good teacher. He asked him to teach Kung fu and later on he says you are best friend I ever have.
4. Never say Die
I was inspired by these two dialogues of the movie. Where both the teacher and student realized their situation and stood up for their respect.
In a situation, Mr. Han is very emotional due to his past incident where he lost his family. Its Dre who feels that he needs to get up in life.
He says to his student “You have taught me very important lesson, Xiao Dre. Life will knock us down, but we can choose whether or not to stand back up.”
Also in a situation, Dre is about to loose after his leg injury in final match. He wants to fight badly.
Mr Han asks him “Just tell me, Xiao Dre, why? Why do you need to go back out there so badly?”
Dre replies “Because I’m still scared. And no matter what happens, tonight, when I leave, I don’t want to be scared anymore”
Movies, The Karate Kid v2010 and v1984 had same message to give in. I liked the 2010 version.
Which version did you like?
